Montreal fills up with students every August. McGill, Concordia, UdeM, UQAM, \u00c9TS \u2014 tens of thousands of people arriving at once, most of them carrying a phone and a laptop they cannot afford to lose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are on Notre-Dame West, a short trip from most of the downtown campuses, and we see the same pattern every single term. A quiet September, a very busy October, and a brutal January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is what actually goes wrong, why the timing is so predictable, and what to sort out before class starts rather than after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why a broken phone hits a student harder<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Most people who break a phone are inconvenienced. Students get locked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your university uses app-based two-factor authentication, a dead phone means no access to your student email, your course portal, or your registration. If your transit pass or student card lives in your wallet app, you may not be able to get to campus or into a building. Add a deadline and it stops being a gadget problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That pressure is exactly why students overpay \u2014 panic-buying a replacement at full retail costs several times what a repair does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The three things we see every term<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Cracked screens, mostly in October<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not dramatic falls. A phone sliding off a library desk, out of a coat pocket on the metro, off a bunk in a shared apartment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two mistakes follow. People keep using it, so glass dust works into the digitizer and a simple glass repair becomes a full assembly job. And people assume a phone that still works is fine \u2014 but a cracked screen breaks the seal that keeps moisture out, which matters a lot once slush season starts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charging ports, all year<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Student phones get plugged and unplugged more than anyone else\u2019s \u2014 apartment, library, lecture hall, caf\u00e9, back home. Thousands of insertion cycles a year, usually with a cheap cable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tell is a phone that only charges at a certain angle, or charges from one cable but not another. Before you panic, shine a light into the port. Nine times out of ten it is compacted pocket lint, not a broken port, and clearing it properly is a small job. Forcing the cable is what turns it into a real one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Batteries, and then January<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

This is the Montreal-specific one, and it catches people out every year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lot of student phones are hand-me-downs or refurbished units already two or three years into their life. Lithium batteries do not fade gently at that age \u2014 they fall off a cliff. Then the temperature drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cold does not permanently destroy a battery, but it sharply reduces the capacity it can deliver while it is cold. A marginal battery that just about copes in September will hand you a phone that dies at 40% while you are waiting for the 24 bus in February. Every winter we replace batteries for people who thought their phone had suddenly broken. It had not \u2014 it was already weak, and the cold exposed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your phone is shutting down above 20%, or draining in sudden jumps, replace the battery before winter rather than during it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do these five things before term starts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

  1. Check your battery health.<\/strong> On iPhone it is in Settings \u203a Battery \u203a Battery Health. Under 85% and you should plan a replacement. Under 80% and it will struggle in the cold.<\/li>\n\n\n
  2. Clear your charging port.<\/strong> Look inside with a light. If charging has become fussy, deal with it now.<\/li>\n\n\n
  3. Set up automatic backup.<\/strong> The worst conversation we have is not about a phone that cannot be fixed \u2014 it is about a phone that cannot be fixed and held the only copy of someone\u2019s notes.<\/li>\n\n\n
  4. Sort out your two-factor codes.<\/strong> If your authenticator only exists on your phone, print recovery codes or add a second method now.<\/li>\n\n\n
  5. Get a real case and a screen protector.<\/strong> Cheaper than the deductible on anything, and it is the one thing that reliably prevents October.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Budget: repair, replace, or buy used<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    We will not quote you a fake number, because the honest answer depends on your exact model, what is actually broken, and whether there is secondary damage from using it broken for a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What we can tell you is how to think about it. A battery or a charging port on a working phone is almost always worth fixing. A screen on a recent flagship usually is. A major repair on a five-year-old phone often is not \u2014 and in that case a tested refurbished device<\/a> is usually better value than a new one on a plan.
